Automatic Cat Feeders
Your cat associates you with their food, as you wake up and feed them, or go to bed and feed them or when they come through the microchip cat flaps you feed them. By incorporating an automatic cat feeder into your cat daily routine, you become disassociated from what you’re feeding them and they no longer pester you for food with human-like cries. Personally, I have a cat that will cry like a baby until it gets what it wants. Even if I’m in the dead of sleep, they will cry and cry. My friend is very similar, this is why she decided to use plastic bowls, like the ones that PetWeighter (read more) provide to feed their cat when the cat is really begging for it.
After I purchased a cat feeder, my cat has been able to be a little more independent and less reliant on me for critical parts of their day. Before I list my top choices, let’s take a look at the benefits as well as some important things you need to know before you take the decision to buy a cat feeder.
The Top Benefits of an Automatic Cat Feeder
- Your pet can be fed while you’re on a trip.
- You can control their diet.
- You can control when they eat.
- You have full control over who eats what.
- Less work for you.
Not many know about capacity and how important it is when choosing a cat feeder. Little do they know, it’s an essential feature. If you’re someone like me who takes a lot of business trips, you need to have food stocked up for days on end – maybe even weeks. The longer you’re away and more often, the higher your capacity should be. If you’re generally home a lot, you won’t have to pay extra for a higher capacity, as you can suffice with something lower for an excellent price.
Some models are safer than others, as some manufacturers chose aesthetic over functionality, but I’ve done my best to include my honest opinion about each of the following products. Most are easy to use, but again, manufacturers chose design over ease of operation, which I’ll also discuss below.
It took some time getting used to for the cat but it was worth it in the end. I’ve been fortunate enough to try more than one with my cats throughout various moves and switch-ups, so I’ve curated a list of the best automatic cat feeder.
The Pet Feedster USA PF-10 (Automated Pet Feeder for Cats)
If your kitten is anything like mine, portion control is a must. Thankfully, the Pet Feedster can entirely dispense a proportionate amount of your choosing. The proportions can go as low as one tablespoon or as high as 6 cups – incredible! My cats have various meal ratio recommendations, so I thought this was a supercritical function and benefit.
Here’s an overview:
One of the main benefits of this device is that it’s ant-proof and paw-proof, eliminating the risk of bugs in the cat’s food and your cat receiving a sneaky helping! The aforementioned about disassociation is achievable with this device. Your cat will no longer wait on you for food.
A great feature that this device offers is that it has a capacity of up to 10 pounds – much more than many in this article. The safety for this device is also fantastic. There are no overhanging features that could harm the pet while eating. I rate this 5/5 for security and definitely a 5 for ease of use. Simple load the kibble into the dispenser and set it to go!
No matter where you place this specific automatic cat feeder, ants will never get into it! The team at Pet Feedster has incorporated a water tray underneath the food to prevent ants from getting into the feeder. The Pet Feedster USA PF-10 will rarely ever need human maintenance and continues serving cats whenever it’s programmed to! If you want something simple that’s ant-proof, this one is definitely for you and reigns supreme over many on my recommendations list.
CSF-3 Cat Super Feeder
Don’t let the Amazon title intimidate you – the CSF-3 has a ton of features, though! These functions include an analog timer, chute cover, bowl with a stand, and has a capacity of 4 and ¾ cups. This feeder has the power to dispense 48 daily meals for those with a ton of cats. Unfortunately, I only have two, and I don’t think it’s healthy to feed them 24 meals per day, so I can’t test this out for you! However, I can boast about the high functionality and reliability of this device.
The Super Feeder was one of the first that I used, and I LOVED the idea of an analog timer to program – this was the selling point for me and made it a desirable choice over others. When my kitty was sick, this came in handy with food dispensing. She wasn’t allowed to have a certain amount per day, and the Super Feeder never allowed me to forget when she was eating. I do a lot daily between work and friends, but I wanted to make sure my cat was receiving the attention she needs, whether I was there or not.
The analog timer made it easier for the device to be used, although it can be a bit tough for first-timers. I thought it was quite easy, and it’s mostly safe. It’s not waterproof, so you’ll want to make sure to stay away from electrical devices, equipment, and the outdoors.
Even though this super feeder offers a lot, it’s quite compact. I wouldn’t recommend putting this outside because it’s not waterproof, but it is one of the best automatic cat feeders on the market, regardless. Kibbles that are one-fourth of an inch are recommended, as anything bigger may get stuck. Most store-bought cat kibble isn’t anything larger, so you have nothing to worry about, but if you’re someone who curates your organic kibble combos, you may want to re-think for size.
Wireless Whiskers – Automatic Pet Feeder
Specifically made for cats on a diet, this awesome cat feeder is similar to the first on our list, proportioning the dispensing of food. A key selling point of this one that I LOVED (but may not matter much to the cat), was that it greeted each one of my cats personally by name. This feature is perfect for organization purposes, and can put your pet on a diet immediately upon opening.
This pet feeder works by using one of the two tags included on your pet’s collar. This will help differentiate who gets what dispensed. The best part is that the tags allow the cat feeder to keep the cat out of the dog’s food and vice versa! No more menacing mishaps where the pup plays tricks on the cat – your pets will each receive their food, given to them by name. The included tag also works with harnesses, too.
Because the tags automatically detect who is who, the ease of use is fantastic past first time setup but may not be so easy for pets who have to climb under the arch themselves and scan their tag. If you have a bigger animal, this definitely isn’t a safe option as they could get stuck under the arch during tag scanning.
The operational features of this pet feeder set them apart from the rest, but may be a deciding factor when purchasing. For a more organized food dispensary that also personal to your pet, the Wireless Whiskers Automatic Pet Feeder is for you! The capacity of this device is 5 pounds.
SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder
For those with a minimalistic ambiance and interior décor style, this cat feeder and dog feeder is the best choice for you. A pretty simple mechanism with a simple operation, this pet feeder works with the use of microchips for food designation purposes. Different technology than our last, the lid also forms a type of seal so that the kibble stays fresh and so that your pets receive the food they need.
When it’s time to eat, the lip pops open. I used this once while staying at a friend’s house and it allowed our combined four cats to eat with ease when they needed to. It wasn’t messy or disorganized, and the lid was a great touch for keeping bugs out since it was a beach house.
The only negative aspect to this pet feeder is that the capacity is much smaller than the others at up to 2.5 cups of dry food. There is an arch on this food dispenser, and the animal has to put their head underneath this arch for the microchip and device to register with one another. I wouldn’t recommend this for larger animals, but would recommend this to slick cats! This one keeps food fresher, longer, while organizing who gets what.
Timed Cat Feeder
The title is self-explanatory but has a much different design than the others featured. Depending on the size of the cat, there are two different sizes available. Personally, I was able to use the 3.25’ H x 14.5’ W x 12.25’ D for my cat, and she didn’t seem to have any qualms about it.
The selling point of the Timed Cat Feeder was the 90-hour meal time program AND the incorporation of twin ice packs. The ice packs help keep both dry and wet foods as fresh as possible for when the cats must eat! These are necessary for proportion and freshness purposes.
All bowls can be placed in the dishwasher for cleaning, and this device serves up to 5 meals. The capacity is much less than others I’ve mentioned, but the 90-hour meal time program makes up for it. This one is sleek and compact, but with that comes a smaller capacity. Unfortunately, this one only has a 3-pound food capacity. If you only have one cat, this automatic cat feeder should do the trick.
Out of all the products mentioned, my favorite would have to be the Pet Feedster USA PF-10. The capacity along with the proportioning features worked well with my cats. I was able to take care of them from a distant and allow them to be less co-dependent if they wanted to. Even if your pets are feisty, it’s one of the best on the market to help them with control.
